Welcome To Portland Veterinary Service

Portland Veterinary Service has been a central aspect for animal care in the Portland area since 1966. Prior to that, Dr. Cox provided veterinary services to the area. Dr. Dennis Opperman joined the practice in 1979, and in 1980 became a partner in the practice. He has served Portland and the surrounding communities for over 40 years, many of those years in 24/7 service. Starting in the 1990s, the small animal portion of the practice became an increasingly larger part of the practice and so in 2004 the practice was divided into separate small and large animal practices. Dr. Dennis assumed the small animal practice and with his wife Karen, the practice continued to grow. In 2010 their daughter Dr. Bethany Opperman joined the practice and helped to expand the services provided. In the fall of 2022, Dr. Bethany assumed control of the clinic, with Dr. Dennis continuing to practice medicine and Karen retiring.

The current building was constructed in 2006 and has 5 exam rooms, a treatment area with dental wet sink, dedicated surgery suite, pharmacy, kennel space for patients and another for boarding, doctors offices, grooming space, and spacious waiting room. There is one room dedicated to feline patients with pheromones and other fear free support, and with time there may be feline specific only hours offered.

The practice aims to develop long term client-pet-doctor relationships, with an emphasis on current best medicine practices and client education to promote the team approach to your pet’s care. Every member of our team strives to provide excellent compassionate medical care to your pet and the local community.
